Floating Live Edge Vanity - with homemade brackets.
Переглядів 10 тис.4 роки тому
I welded a couple of brackets to create this beautiful floating walnut vanity top. I saw brackets similar to these on the internet and made my own version of them. They attach directly to the studs behind the sheetrock and you sheetrock around them. They came out very strong and I are completely out of sight unless you get below the counter top. Brackets are made from 1/4 steel from onlinemetal...

Hopefully, I can save some people some hassle. This design from his video and plans is not supportive. It will pull out screws as you lean back. The back rest relies on a couple screws at the back of cross bar into the back of each arm rest. The arm rest pulls on the front and rips right out in no time. I bought the plans for the cut list and started building. A few minor changes but not structural changes. If you look 15 seconds into the video there are perpendicular braces behind the cooler. These are absolute game changers. After my 2nd one failed I messaged him and he said the crossbar was enough. It is NOT. After my third one failed which included a few different things it still failed. The first 2 failed twice. I have since added perpendicular pieces to the crossbar in the back on the 2 inside legs about 16 inches tall. Finally, it is solid. I could go over all of the other changes but the expectation for the cross bar being pulled straight back to support you leaning back is not physically possible. So if anyone buys the plans, add a couple vertical supports as they are not shown in the build or the plans.

You can download the manual if you don't have it. There you will find the schematics & parts. Most parts are interchangable with other lathes but I think you can order parts through Harbor Freight or through Central Machinery.

Very nice. I just used power tools to make a small dough bowl out of Ash that feel on my property. I power carved the rough shape and most of the inside, then finished the inside with gouges. I have made several in the past with hand tools but it wears ya out and took like 9 hours to make a small one. I like to leave the outside contour on mine to make them unique. Some have bug damage and I like to leave it for character as long as it won't compromise the bowl. The inside usually turns out very asymmetrical because I follow the contours left from the live edge as well. But I have decided power tools is definitely the way to go. I knocked this last one out in about 2 hrs.
